Enquiries regarding use of Centre facilities can be directed to the Manager:

Steps to becoming an MCEM User

  1. Fill in the MCEM User Request Form (below).
  2. Return the form to the Manager.
  3. The Manager will contact you to arrange a New User meeting to be attended by yourself, your supervisor (compulsory for students, desirable for junior research staff), the relevant Instrument Manager(s) and the Manager. The New User meeting will determine the following:
    (a) The research problem to be solved;
    (b) If the MCEM facilities are suitable for solving this research problem;
    (c) If so, which microscopes and specimen preparation techniques are needed;
    (d) The scope of the work and what training is required;
    Note: Users are normally trained to do the research themselves, unless the amount of work involved is relatively small or if the microscopy and interpretation is too complex, in which case it is more efficient for Centre staff to perform the research. The User is expected to be present while their samples are being examined.
    e) Safety issues.
  4. The Instrument Manager(s) will contact you to arrange training on microscopes and in specimen preparation techniques as required.
  5. You will need to download a copy of the MCEM User Manual (below);
  6. Before you commence training you will receive a Safety Induction to the Centre. As part of this Safety Induction, you need to complete and sign the Safety Induction Checklist And User Agreement on the last page of the Manual. All external Users and Monash Users from other campuses must also complete the Monash Safety Induction Program, which is available via CD.

Please note that due to the heavy demand for access to Centre facilities and for training, it is very difficult for the Centre to accommodate urgent requests. It will typically take around two weeks before training can commence and two to four weeks for samples to be examined by a Centre staff member.
